Using Video Games to Learn.

I explored one of the water cooler games and one that caught my attention was the Somalia pirate game. It is a political game that revolves around the Somalia pirate ship controversy. The the way to play the game, is to control a ship while avoiding threatening objects at sea. And the goal is to capture people to ransom for money. I found this game very interesting and cruel, since there have been people in real life, that have been abducted by this ships, only to lose their lives. I love playing video games, but some may have a bad message. However most of the games I play are very clean minded and just plain fun. I stick to Nintendo games, because I have been a fan since birth and most of the games that come from Nintendo are for all ages and have little to no violence.

I found these games to all contain a certain message that would somehow be soaked up by our subconscious as we played them. They simple, fun, and get a weird message across to the person who is playing them. I love video games very much, but I’m not sure these are what suit me. They are educational without a doubt, but they just do not appeal to me. The reason is because I found a lot of these games clunky looking overall and lacked a long lasting appeal. The controls were ok, but there was not much that really made me want to say, “This is awesome! I can play this thing for hours on end!”. But for about 30 minutes to an hour if you have some free time it is fine.

Water Cooler games and the website were both intriguing all in all. I definitely feel people obviously can and do learn from playing video games. I have learned a countless amount of information about fish and bugs and how museums work just by playing simple role playing games. Video games won’t rot your mind if you play wisely and don’t spend your entire life playing in front of a TV. The important thing that every video game has is a goal/mission to complete. Whether it is making a goal or slaying the monster, you have something to accomplish. This is where video games make their mark, by inspiring us to achieve something we believe we can do. The only problem is too many people like to accomplish goals in the fantasy world and not the real world.

My Research: Online Self and Real Life Self

For my research project I have chosen to study the differences between a person’s personality. It seems people have two personalities these days. There is a person’s online personality. Which is the person they created and the person they want to show other people for whatever reason. And there is the real life person, which is the person that the person truly is. The true personality is obviously the person’s true identity. Now as you can see this person has two identities. The REAL identity and the ONLINE identity. As a person joines TWITTER or FACEBOOK, that person tends to follow/add as a friend a certain popular group or people that he/she wants to integrate himself/herself with. For some or whatever reason he/she wants to create a different image online and act as almost a completely different person. The question is: Why do people do this and for what reason are they doing it? Is anyone out there the true person online and in real life? Are there people out there they are trying to impress? Where did they get this idea? Do the people their friends know about this? Do they care of it? So many questions to ask. Popular social networking sites like FACEBOOK, TWITTER, BLOGGER, and more are the places where people take on a certain identity. Some people accept certain people even if they may not know who these people are. There are people that may just appeal to people and they accept them or follow them even if they may not know them at all. People these days on FACEBOOK have over 100+ friends and may not even know half of them. And probably only see 10% of them on a daily basis and are on a close personal friend level. The word “Friend” has many different meanings at this point. There is also a term called “Friendster” which is an online friend that is not really a friend as compared to a “Friend” which an actual friend in real life. Why do people have friendsters? And why do people accept people they may not know? Why do people not just deny them? Why do people request these people they don’t know? These days it seems everything can be questioned. But luckily there are many ways to find out. Any question has an answer. You may not find it at first, but the longer you search, eventually you will find an answer. There are so many ways one can connect to others worldwide these days on the internet these days. There is Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Blogger, Tumblr, and so much more. Cultures can spread from one place to another. If a person gets creative and records a song online, or has a strong message that he or she wants to spread, it is very easy for others to view his or her video and spread the message. Many people these days rise to fame for having certain videos loaded on the internet. It is amazing how so many people will view these videos in the coming days after posting the video. A video recorded in the United States that involves a routine dance could spread and be imitated in Japan, Russia, Germany, or anywhere in the world. Things can spread so fast over the internet. And how is that anyway? Well the answer is pretty simple. If one person likes the video or post, that person can like it and spread it around. More and more people see it, and as a result it gets a huge amount of views. And the viewership can continue.

Cultures are shared all over the world. Youtube is beating television. People all over the world are joining in this mass community called the internet. User Generated Organization is helping this out. As user will submit videos that get watched by people. And the people will spread it around via Twitter, Facebook, and other ways. A person’s videos can also be remixed as well by another person. Individualism helps the user show his or her true self, because they don’t have target audience and as a result they have no one to worry about impressing. This can help that person share his or her true thoughts and feelings. Some will fix their hair or appearance to look better for any viewers they might get. Overall though many things can get spread around these days. It can be fun to get recognized and build a fan base, but people need to also be careful for what they or post, because one can never know what they might say or write that may come back to hurt them one day. The internet is a wonderful way to connect with others though, just be careful what you do in the end. Remember to also have fun and be aware of what you do.

Technology: It makes us and it breaks us.

Technology is both wonderful and terrible in my opinion. What makes it terrific is the fact that we can use it to do things that we could never do before. Such as talking to people over the internet that may be thousands of miles away. Another good use of technology is how fast news can be transferred from place to place with the global media. It has helped us communicate faster and much more. However, it has also ruined us. With technology used so much, people are not as independent as they used to be. Now they depend on technology way too much and not on themselves. I think creativity has been lost as well, since people no longer take the time to develop something that could have otherwise been a wonderful creation.

I am very old fashioned in what I do and use. I for one still write in a journal instead of an online journal like some people. However, I do have a blog without counting this one. (http://fromjanuarytodecember.blogspot.com/) And I don’t like how so many people have cell phones. I recently recieved one and have been using it way too much. It is making me not pay attention to a lot of things that I should be aware of. Sometimes in class, I will be doing something else on my phone, while the teacher is saying important things that one needs to remember. I use my cell phone to get on the internet when there is no computer available. I also it for texting people and for playing games. I try to put a limit of only having 3 major electronics and no more. Those 3 are cell phone, computer, and video game system. If I get anything else I need to ax one of those out by putting it away and not using it. I use the computer to get homework assignments that need to be typed done and for facebook and twitter. I have been spending way too much time on facebook and need to take some time off. But I use facebook to post what I am up so my friends can see what I am doing.

Those tools shape very little of who I am. On facebook, I post what I am doing and talk to people via commenting on posts. I use the computer to go on YOUTUBE and watch music videos. And I use my Nintendo DS to play obviously video games I love and have just found. These tools shape me as a music lover, social-type person, and video game lover. That is not all my personality has to offer. If you get to know me as a friend you will find out my more things about me. I would never give everything about myself via online as there are loads of strangers and predators that could be watching.
